(SB Nation Boston, Jay King) Kevin Garnett missed Tuesday's practice due to a hip flexor, headlining a long Boston Celtics injury report. Garnett is considered doubtful for Wednesday's game against Detroit at the TD Garden. Also doubtful is Mickael Pietrus, who sat out half of Tuesday's practice to receive treatment on his knee.
Jermaine O'Neal, who missed Sunday's victory against the Chicago Bulls, said his shoulder is still sore but foresees being healthy enough to suit up against Detroit. Brandon Bass also missed Sunday's outing, but is not expected to return for another week or two.

With the Celtics front court so banged up, rookie JaJuan Johnson and veteran Chris Wilcoxshould see extended playing time for the second straight game. Both were pivotal in Boston's 95-91 conquest of the Bulls, displaying game-changing energy and athleticism.
Keyon Dooling returned Sunday after an extended injury absence, but suffered a setback at Tuesday's practice and his status for Wednesday's bout with Detroit is in doubt.

Another day, another injury report
Can’t help but wonder if there is something going on with the Celtic’s training staff. Injuries are part of the game especially with veteran teams but it seems like the Celtics have an inordinate amount. Never seen a team get so many “minor” injuries that show up after games, go from “day to day” to weeks of time missed and things of that nature.
This team can’t go mroe than a couple days without new injuries popping up and it’s definitely becoming a huge concern…
warnerjohn - February 14, 2012
Look around the league.
This is happening to every team.
There was a certain MVP point guard missing from the last game we played.
Every NBA season is sort of a war of attrition – to the healthy goeth the spoils in the end. This season it is magnified.
mmmmm - February 14, 2012
Saw that Garnett was injured in Sunday's game
Kept grabbing his hip area. Seemed to happen either in the second or third quarter. Is there another team in the NBA with so many nagging injuries that keep guys out of 3, 4 or 5 games? Honestly, what is it that sees so many injuries happening to this Celtics team? I am not talking about major injuries as with Portland, but these smaller injuries. It is mind-boggling to me. One question I have is are the Celtics more cautions than just about any team in the league in terms of holding players out of games for minor injuries?
vinnie - February 14, 2012
I'll take nagging injuries over long term ones anyday.
This is what happens in shortened seasons.
And it happens to everyone, young guys have missed games too with nagging stuff, ankles, hips, shoulders, etc…
When you pack this many games into this short of a time, the body can’t take it. Human beings aren’t designed to punish their bodies so much.

and guys keep on forgetting this is a shortened more compressed season, such things are expected to happen!
ZM15 - February 14, 2012
And the fact that Dooling is hurt again is ridiculous
What has the guy played this year, 5 or 6 games? What is up with him? Looks like DWest would have been the better way to go here, as he is certainly going to play more games than Dooling this year :). That is the other thing that seems to happen often with this team. Guys get injured, miss a few games, come back and all of a sudden are injured again. So, if they have no Garnett, no Bass, no Pietrus, no Dooling against Chicago on Thursday, I have to wonder how they will fare.
vinnie - February 14, 2012
The fact that Dooling is hurt again should be eye-opening
.
due to the fact that Dooling’s injury is a hip flexor and so is KG’s. Get ready for a long “day-to-day” for KG as well.
KG got nailed at the top of the key coming down to the offensive end in the last game. I cannot remember the player’s name that nailed him, but no foul was called on the play. It was very obvious, but no call. I was thinking at the time that the Celtics should have sent in a video clip of that play in order to give that other player a vacation with no pay.
After that play, KG was seen grabbing at his torso, but at the time, it seemed to be the lower rib cage that bothered him.
Hopefully, there are different varieties of hip flexors and KG’s is of the minor kind. Get well soon KG!!!
GetYourSoxOn - February 15, 2012
Let's just list the whole team as day-to-day...
This really sucks going into a road trip where we have to play at Chicago, Dallas, and OKC among others
EF37 - February 14, 2012
Mavs on the 20th, OKC on the 22nd
let KG have the next 3 games off and hope he’s feeling good enough to go for those two.
jackscompletelackofsurprise - February 14, 2012
I'm sure glad its' only a hip flexor
(cough) , by the way, what IS a hip flexor?
Dipper - February 14, 2012
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_flexors
Term for the muscles around the hip.
C'sFan - February 14, 2012
They gotta rest him and lotsa therapy - this can be a real slow thing to heal
hip flexors are more than a pain – they are a hang-around-long-past-their-welcome pain. They aren’t always super-seriously debilitating, but they can take a long time to go away and will crimp your mobility – something we don’t want in KG.
I agree with jackscompletelaackofsurprise – rest KG and get this as healed as much as possible.
mmmmm - February 14, 2012
Ainge is in cahoots with the trainers
It’s all part of his secret plan to hold out players so that Doc is forced to use his bench.
LooseCannon - February 14, 2012
Haha, that's it.
C'sFan - February 14, 2012
Interesting
I hope so too.
TSV - February 15, 2012
On the brightside
More exposure for our young ones. Maybe a good or a bad thing we shall see.
The green mamba - February 14, 2012 via mobile
Sure glad Dooling is so much more durable than Delonte West
Master Po - February 14, 2012
+1
Yeah wasn’t that one of main reasons given for Delonte not being re-signed? That move is just another that hasn’t worked out at least so far. Dooling reminds me of Shaq, being day to day, finally coming back then immediately getting hurt again.
Sure would be nice to have a backup that can play PG or SG, provide scoring off the bench and actually make a 3 pointer…
warnerjohn - February 14, 2012 via mobile
With a 15 man roster there should be plenty of backups.
This is a product of age and no training camp.
Finkelskyhook - February 14, 2012
Plenty of backups, but...
…a real shortage of bigs. I doubt JO will play much, or more than one game, before going down again. So, it’s Wilcox, JJJ and Steamer at the 4/5, Pierce/Petrous/Daniels at the 3, Allen/Moore/Daniels at the 2 and Rondo/Bradley at the 1 for the next few games. That’s a credible crew, but very thin.

Master Po - February 14, 2012
Well.....
Only in hindsight can you somehow conclude….. Yeah it was a mistake,
LarryBird33 - February 14, 2012
but in fairness ...GM's get paid for foresight not hindsight....and besides I was not calling out DA
I was actually calling out all the posters who seemed to know with their own “foresight” that Delonte would always be injured or injury prone and therefore Dooling would be better
Can’t have it both ways can you?
Master Po - February 14, 2012

I know it is mainly because of injuries, but Dooling has been a bust so far
vinnie - February 14, 2012

You don’t have to be a genus to know Delonte is a better player.
forever_green - February 14, 2012 via mobile
My understanding is....
that Danny was willing to offer Delonte the vet minimum, but West wanted more.
Danny moved on. Delonte did too, but could only end up getting what the Cs would have given him in the first place.
If that is how it actually went down, Delonte played a significant role in how it all played out.

Not foresight. Just expectations based on past performance.
Like with stocks. That’s no guarantee.
I always liked Delonte’ and was fully expecting him to be the first signing after the lockout ended. But while I was surprised at the time that he wasn’t, I can still understand and accept DA & Doc’s thinking on why they didn’t sign him. Remember, it wasn’t just Dooling. At the time they thought they’d have Green AND they got Marquis back. Between those three, plus the youngsters Moore & Bradley – not a lot of room for Delonte’.
mmmmm - February 14, 2012
Marquis................useless
vinnie - February 15, 2012
Still surprised they didn't sign Delonte
He really was an excellent backup PG, while Dooling has yet to prove himself. I just assume there were factors involved in that decision that we don’t know about.
JR99 - February 15, 2012
Good news foe Stiemer
Him and JjJ should experience some live game scenario exposure. Beats watching.
Tenacious D - February 14, 2012
If we look on the bright side we'll be seeing a lot of JJJ

The good news ...
is that two of my favorite Celtics, Chris Wilcox and JaJuan Johnson, should get a lot of run in the next game.

Another Reason Not To Make Judgments
When the team plays well we know that things are good. But, when they play poorly they could just be having a bad night or guys are playing hurt. They could have the flu. Players want to play and they often don’t tell anyone they are hurt. This includes the coaches and trainers. And some are pretty good at faking it so that even the trainer doesn’t notice a problem. There’s no one to blame. These things happen. Basketball is a pretty rough sport and very hard on the body, young or old. Guys who get thru their careers escaping injury are pretty darn lucky.
As to Dooling, I think he’s done for the season. It could be that nothing definite is showing up on MRI’s or x-rays yet.
TrueGreen - February 14, 2012
That is why.......
You win as many games as you can early on. Specially against teams that you should easily beat and in games you dominated but then melt down at the end. Consider also the fact that Boston had a ton of home games early in the schedule.
It’s to cushion for instances like this. But then you play almost .500 ball. Now the injuries are happening and the schedule gets tougher. Plus a ton of road games ahead.
LarryBird33 - February 14, 2012
Wait till the playoffs come and, if we qualify, it will be intersting to know how many 7 game series, if any, we survive with this cast of “walking wounded”. And to think some some of us truly believe we will be in top shape for the playoffs. Lets keep dreaming the Dream of the Just.
Dantenina - February 14, 2012
Looking at the bright side; If we have all our injuries now: we wont have any in August and September 2012
Dantenina - February 14, 2012
This season is making me hate the NBA
vinnie - February 14, 2012
It's early in the season, there is no downside to this.
Now that we’ve won some games and we know we have a competitive team, I’m really excited for Jujuan Johnson’s audition.
sofutomygaha - February 14, 2012
Garnett
This has got to be the worst NBA season ever. Is there anyone who isn’t injured? On the bright side, we get to see Johnson play more and he’ll some much needed experience. I was also really happy when the C’s got Wilcox. Now he can show that he was a good acquisition if he hasn’t already.
ddjapan - February 14, 2012
Wilcox has been inconsistent is entire career. I wouldn't expect that to change
As for the NBA, the fact they forced a 66 season down all of our throats makes me sick.

true_celticsphilippines - February 14, 2012
Hey remember when
Rondo, bass, wilcox, pietrus, and allen were all out and we played great basketball? We are now a much deeper team so we still have some firepower. Go C’s!

18.5 ppg, 9.25 rpg, 2.2 apg and 1.62 blocks per game....
…on a team with 3 other excellent bigs in Milsap, Favors and Kanter…overrated?…really?….we couldn’t use 75% of those numbers?…inside scoring and rebounding are our two biggest weaknesses…
csfansince60s - February 14, 2012
no big deal....
kg’s rest month was moved from january to february…
goldenapple - February 14, 2012
Yep
Garnett has taken several weeks off in EVERY YEAR since he’s been a Celtic, usually in January…..and every time, it was an unseen injury. Then he typically disappears completely, not even sitting on the bench. Have no idea what all that means, just a fact that sorta sits there.
JR99 - February 15, 2012
So you guys think KG takes a mini-vacay and he enhanced it this year by grabbing at his hip in the last game?
clover - February 15, 2012
No way to know
But same sequence 5 years in a row seems too much to call coincidence. We’ll never know what’s really going on…. but it’s something….
JR99 - February 15, 2012
If KG misses a long period of time
This team will struggle to make the playoffs. But, so be it. They aren’t winning anything this year anyway, and I am sure the Celts are going to tell us that KG is day-to-day.
vinnie - February 15, 2012
Yep
Day to day for a month. And if true to form of past 4 years, he’ll disappear from sight during his break.
