Pierce > Pacers... 4 In A Row And We Are On A Roll!!!
by Master Po on Jan 27, 2012 10:02 PM EST
in Boston Celtics Games
- Paul Pierce and the Boston Celtics are looking like a team.
- They are beginning to look like a team who can compete.
- They are beginning to look like a team with a solid bench.
- Celtics had 48 points in the paint
- Celtics limited the Pacers to 6 offensive rebounds
- Celtics attacked the basket all game long
- Celtics actually had energy that I thought they would never have after the game last night, Excellent effort.
- KG with more great energy and defense effort - especially for a guy pronounced DOA two weeks ago..
- I am amazed how we seem to have to turned the corner. Ye of little faith!
- Bill Kennedy couldn't resist a poor call against the Celtics in the closing minutes. He needs to be fined again by Stern.
- Finally......Paul Pierce should be the NBA Player of the Week. The Captain was amazing! 28 Points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists and 3 steals
Enjoy the ride! Enjoy the Pride!
the truth or hardwear store lol
i think stiemsma got a foul for standing goofy lol the reffs try to give them the game WERE BACK BABY yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 and counting....
Another solid win for the C’s as they look like they are in a good groove now and running on all cylinders.
Game ball goes to Pierce as he had a great night.
KG also had another good night and looks like he has found the fountain of youth.
Pitreius and Wilcox also had solid games and played key roles in the win.
I loved the fact the C’s got 48 points in the paint tonight.. I hope that trend can continue.
Feels weird to say it but its good to get at .500 and to be 9 and 9 so far this season.
fordescort - January 27, 2012
without Rondo, they have to hustle
The main thing missing at the start of the year was hustle. Maybe part of it was creaky bodies that just couldn’t shake the rust. Whatever. In the last few games, there has been grit and frenetic energy.
Why?
The gallows has a way of focusing attention. With Rondo down, the Celtics FINALLY lost that pernicious confidence in doing things the same way that they have done them since KG arrived. That way won’t work! The talent is no longer the same.
Celtics have to scramble, like underdogs, to compete.
When Rondo comes back, the Celtics will collapse.
The same misplaced confidence will return. The hustle defense fueled by Avery Bradley will evaporate. Instead of mad dashes up the floor, hoping for a fast break lay-up, the same plodding offense will return.
Enjoy the “new Celtics” while you can.
I hope I am wrong. Doubt it.
Frank Malzone - January 28, 2012
What happens when RONDO and RAY come back?
Bradley sitting I have no prob with, he is one of the worst offensive point guards Ive ever seen…a momentum killer.
I like Pietrus starting and Rayallen off the bench.
I’ll say it again, were a Chris Kamen away from contending.
Sarcazmo's Funhouse - January 27, 2012
When Rondo and Ray come back, Doc has a much stronger bench to use
And, he won’t be as hesitant to play these guys. This is only a good thing.
vinnie - January 27, 2012
you guys who are criticizing bradley after he lead the team to ten consecutive quarters of d the nba has never seem before scare me
wahz - January 28, 2012
+1
As we saw tonight, Bradley’s offense doesn’t matter much. We score anyway. His D, on the other hand, is awesome, and extremely effective.
JR99 - January 28, 2012
i do wonder
if bradleys talents are maximized by playing with the starters… where all he has to do is play D and not worry about the O. it might be interesting to see if bradley gets a little more minutes with the starters and if rondo plays a few more with the second unit because he can create more O than avery.
rm81 - January 28, 2012
respect defense
I’d say the entire reason we have a winning stretch is because of Bradley setting the tone defensively. Yes his offense is questionable but he needs more time- he will work it out eventually.
Have you ever seen anyone pick up the starting point guard for a full game?
Having a second year player who’s barely played sends a significant message to the veterans that says ‘Hell, if the young kid can do it and do it well, we can do it too’.
It’s changed the face of our defense to what it was like at it’s peak in 2008.
Our bench is just awesome too.
Chambers - January 28, 2012
obviously we play better without rondo – the results speak for themselves. You are right about our need for kaman but who would you trade for him. he is an expiring deal. certainly you don’t trade rondo for him. i would only trade rondo in a package for dwight howard
ForexPirate - January 28, 2012
If you're gonna trade Pierce to Indiana...
Do it now. Seriously, we have to keep this guy…NBA player of the week for sure.

right now. Totally taking over. Flirting with triple doubles every game. Needless to say, Ainge might want to reconsider this trade talk… The Captain and The Truth!!!
bblakes5 - January 27, 2012
Pierce's stat line for this game is just sick
28 pts
10 rebounds (8 def)
8 assists!
3 steals!
2 blocks!
Pierce was dominating on both ends of the court.
mmmmm - January 28, 2012
those are sick stats indeed

Only 4 guys have had a stat line better or equal to this in last 3 years

Please don't wake me up
I am having this recurring dream that the Celtics have won 4 in a row, all without Rondo, and two of them without Ray and JO. It is a little hazy, but it looks like a rookie and a second year man are getting a lot of play in the backcourt. also, two guys who look like Pierce and KG are plying really well, while the Pierce impersonator is playing like an MVP. Finally, some French guy keeps hitting big shots. Please don’t wake me up, because I like this dream.

Back at .500!!! :)
I agree, Po… The Truth SHOULD be the player of the week! And a big, big hand to the bench players who are now beginning to be comfy with their roles….
I honestly didn’t think Wilcox would be an instant impact coming off an injury but wow!
The 2 new guards are stepping up big time!
I wonder if it was Doc’s call or PP’s to make PP do the point… ‘cos it’s working big time.
We’re climbing up the eastern standings.. yeehaw! ;)
japsuki - January 27, 2012
Remember when...
Kenny Anderson was traded for Baker… Delk for all his abilities wasn’t much of a ball handler, so Antoine Walker was the Point Forward?
Ugh, they should have never made that trade. Considering the weak EC, I think that 02 team could have made the Finals the next year.
And yeah, it’s funny that PP is the backup point guard at this point.

A Rare Case
…where demoting the starters is an improvement. Two younger sets of legs. really would consider bringing Ray off the bench when he gets back but thats for later.
Tenacious D - January 27, 2012
My take
Pierce is the difference. He wasn’t healthy to start the year. And when he first came back, he wasn’t in shape (understandably)
He looked a step slow before.
Now he looks like he’s back – and I like it.

celtics2011 - January 27, 2012
It really feels good to be able to stay up to watch some great games being played- all wins, of course..
The past few wins have really shown the teams character, and now that we’ve gotten back into playing condition, let’s hope that the injuries will stay at a minimum.
With the rooks getting some valuable playing time, it should stand them in good stead with all the back to backs coming up, and as they gain confidence and continue the stifling defence they’ve been showing, they’re going to continue to get more and more time on the court.
Lygafe.
Lionel Gaffen / Fotomix.
lygafe - January 27, 2012
Celtics play best where they share
When the ball is moving, the Celtics play their best. When they stand around and go iso, they are much easier to defend. Defense is still strong and will have to be their bread and butter. Offense is still best through Pierce; that won’t change
Kansas10 - January 27, 2012
agree
Offence must go through Pierce, I hope this continues when Rondo comes back.
forever_green - January 27, 2012 via mobile
I agree with you guys
Celticsdude - January 27, 2012
+1
Yes, Rondo is a great playmaker. But at times it seems like he holds onto the ball for the entire shotclock that it kills the offense. Kinda feels like he’s looking for a “selfish” assist.
I love the little guy, don’t get me wrong. And if he is guilty of “selfish” assists, he’s not as “selfish” as Lebron James.. but hey, it wouldn’t hurt the team if the offense runs through PP more. (ie. half the possessions Rondo looks for assists, half of ’em, PP does his thing.)
Keltic - January 28, 2012
I think this is probably the only bright spot for the aging C's for a lockout shortened season...
>>> We can now actually shuffle younger legs & (kinda older) role players with more minutes into the lineup for the vets to take a breather… even rookies! …and they have responded pretty well now that they’re getting comfy.

This is what I’ve been saying! Kaman would be a huge upgrade at the center position
Celticsdude - January 27, 2012

Celticsdude - January 27, 2012
put together*
Celticsdude - January 27, 2012
kaman makes 14 million this year so they will have to get a third team
duqe2 - January 27, 2012
I know
BTW, I read in a Hornets blog that N.O. Would have to take back between 8.2 and 18.5 million. The biggest issue is to get the draft picks and young assets the Hornets want. I’m thinking we might have to give up JO and perhaps Dooling (but no way we’re dealing Bradley or Moore, that’s where a third team would help. I think).
Again, I think a few teams (like the Mavs) were involved in three-team scenarios that would have sent West to Boston and JO to Dallas (I think).
Celticsdude - January 27, 2012

But it’s possible

Celticsdude - January 28, 2012
that is the current rumor
it is a long shot though.
elvyn - January 28, 2012
The next three months are really going to test the mettle of the team.
It’s important for the rooks to gain confidence now, since the coming schedule will be a brutal one, and young, fresh legs are going to be in demand.
February- 4 back to backs, March- five B. to Bs, and April tops them all with 4 B to Bs and a triple header to boot – 15 games in 26 days.
lygafe - January 27, 2012

Quotable quotes:
Doc: “It’s simple right now with our team. Kevin said it. We’ve simplified our offense to the bare minimum. We’re running 3 plays.”
Pierce: “They’re the number one offensive rebounding team in the league. We concentrated on that and got some 2nd chance pts ourselves.”
PP on his 17-pt 3rd: “I like to come out in the 3rd quarter and be aggressive. I focus on trying to get better as the game goes on.”

Orlando blown out again by N.O.
could he be ripe for Boston ?
gocanes1 - January 27, 2012
meant to sat say could Dwight be ripe for Boston
gocanes1 - January 27, 2012
The more Orlando loses, the more likely he's traded midseason
We should be wanting Orlando to win as many games it can the next six weeks so Otis Smith doesnt have the opportunity or excuse to trade. As long as they appear to be a title contender, Howard isn’t going anywhere.
So the Magic need to win a lot and win big up until March 15, then lose just as frequently for the rest of the season and playoffs. That forces Howard to go into free agency and that’s our opportunity to pitch to him.

"QUOTE of the Year"... remember this?
we are looking to find out this team’s CEILING. When you’re looking for a ceiling — i.e., "how good can this team be?" — BAD GAMES DON’T COUNT. Even if they had 10 stinkers in a row, it wouldn’t touch the ceiling… it would only lower the floor. Only great games affect the ceiling. (-JR99)
seems like we’re looking WAAAAAY up (into the rafters?!?) after that Orlando comeback…

KEEP IT GOING
It was a great win, a great week, we played with the right attitude all week for the first time this season. Our bench was very good top to bottom, Wilcox, Bass, Pietrus, the young guards, everyone you can name. If we play like this with our depth then ADD Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen to the mix, plus JO, this team can do whatever it wants to.

this is the best bench we've had in the big 3 era
Pietrus and Bass are great. Wilcox is starting to round into form. Bradley and Moore are starting to show lots of promise
mc34 - January 28, 2012
Lets not get ahead of ourselves
I am not convinced yet.. The celtics are winning right now because the injuries to ray and rondo permit doc to use the right combination of players who complement each other. Im sorry but rondo need to come off the bench and let moore start as he can hit the open shot and I also think ray shuld be coming off the bench and pietrus should start because hes more athletic and a better shooter than ray it seems.
celtz_believer - January 28, 2012 via Android app
The irony…
The green mamba - January 28, 2012 via mobile
Seriously?
Did you just state that you think Pietrus is a better shooter than Ray Allen?
Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, but Wow!
Cletus1985 - January 28, 2012
Yes
They’re pretty close in terms of shooting as pietrus barely misses. I seriouslyy think pietrus is a better player than Ray Allen at this point in his career. Pietrus is more athletic, more tough and can be a lockdown defender. Ray allen cant create his own shot as pietrus seems to do sometimes and he can elevate more. Cmon guys lets be real!!
celtz_believer - January 28, 2012 via Android app
good points, and yes, "Ray's Older", but...
… Ray Allen brings 1.6 decades of learning and excelling at his craft, and championship caliber performances for the last .4 decades to any game he’s in, whilst M.P. will have to show me some serious years of HIGH-LEVEL execution for me to take the comparison seriously…
jyrecelts - January 28, 2012
Just LOL
Moore over Rondo, and Pietrus better shooter than Allen? Wow! The only thing I could possibly agree on is getting Allen come off the bench with maybe J.O when everyone gets healthy. IMO, the reason its been working great the last few games is that there’s a balance of young and old with the starters. We can’t maximize Rondo’s ability now when he’s running with four 33+yr old players. I think, depending on the match up and everyone healthy, we should be starting with Pierce, Pietrus, KG, Rondo and either Bass/Wilcox. Then Ray, JO, Daniels/Sasha, Moore/Bradley (depends again on the match up). So only thing really out of the equation is Dooling. I’m kinda hoping he stays inactive because him coming back would just mean less playing time for Moore and Bradley and would also be counter productive specially now that those two are gaining the confidence they need to play out there.
Grared Tailgate - January 28, 2012
Yea
It’s been proven in the Orlando game that Moore is a shooter and has that killer instinct. When they were doubling pierce, usually those passes would be to Rondo and he would not shoot. To be successful, our pg needs to be a shooter and moore can be just that. As much as I love rondo, his way of always looking for a selfish assist is not what this team needs. When he comes back to the lineup, we will return to our losing ways.

Refs=disgusting (again); Wilcox can play? Team gelling
Can’t ignore how bad the refs were in this game. Did they have money on the spread? Whatever…. worst officiating of the season to date.
Who knew Wilcox could play basketball? I thought he came here for the R&R, the nice medical staff, etc. Turns out he’s GOOD.
3 games, 3 different new-guys step up to dramatically affect the game. THIS is how a championship team is built through the regular season. You can just FEEL the confidence, the trust, the FUN, and the intensity growing with each game. All of which is coinciding with their physical improvement… they’re getting into game shape, and it’s showing in their performance.
At this point, I’m prepared to call the Cs true contenders. As the season moves on, that may change to ‘top contenders.’
I’m just curious to see what happens when Ray and Rondo come back. Because the last time they played, this team was a lot different from what it is now… much less energy, intensity, trust… pretty much less of everything. I believe they won’t be able to resist joining in…. but I’m not sure about that. It’ll be interesting to see what happens.

"Ye of little faith"
“I am amazed how we seem to have to turned the corner. Ye of little faith”
Master Po, you quite hit the nail on the head.
A lot of folks jumping up and down here are in that Ye group you mention.
I’m not a genius (especially about formatting these posts) or the only one who said things like this, but a week ago exactly I said the following about all the talk breaking up the Celtics Big Three and what comments Danny Ainge was or wasn’t saying:
One of the key points I think is that the Celtics know what they are doing. Everything they do doesn’t work, but their philosophy for assembling a team and style of play is better than probably all other teams, except for those who do very well at copying them (very few and usually former Celtics are involved). And it does take a little time to assimilate new players into the way they play. No training camp to speak of magnified that issue. They do know how to fix problems and play team bball as well or better than other teams (look at their assists even without Rondo) and their defense.
Looking for the first opportunity to bash Doc and Danny or ownership is not what they deserve. I understand younger fans without experiencing this team in the 50’s through the 80’s should be cut some slack for doubting, but in the long run you’ll sound far more grounded in what the Celtics are about and raise the quality of conversation here if you remind yourself of that.
They may not have enough to win it all this year, but then again with time they just might. But they try to play the game the right way and they tend to get the most out of their talent and when they get it right they win championships.

Celtics Pride is the term we use to encapsulate that perspective you so eloquently stated...
…I agree 100% and thanks for breaking down that term so completely… C’s fans are able to feel this, but being able to articulate this to critics is invaluable…

I could a long response to this but haven no energy to do so. I think you may have misinterpreted my quote in my post game summary that you used
Maybe I can find some energy to lay out my perspective on this (although who cares really) ….My perspective is different than yours. You have however done a nice job of articulating your feelings.
Peace to SteveZ

No need
Master,
I didn’t really know the context in which you were putting that line into the sum of your reactions, but I took advantage of your apparent call out to those “of little faith” to lay out a perspective I have and I think a lot of others do too about the Celtics.
I was not addressing or pointing this viewpoint at you, but certainly at a large number who comment here and fire off these undue attacks on Ainge, Doc and Celtics players, with sentiments that lose perspective, run hot and cold and turn negative at almost every opportunity. (they couldn’t all be Dan Shaughnessy writing under an untold number of pseudonyms? or could they be?)

well the pressure we apply starting from
Avery is definitely working. Its def rattling these teams but how long will that last, I am not sure. The whole not-knowing-who factor on Avery is helping us at this point.
Our Ds been steady. Steady that our poor offensive possesions isnt affecting our D. KGs been playing unvelievable energy its good to see. I love what Pietrus brings to this team. We lacked scoring options last yr from the bench but def not this yr with Bass n Pietrus. Moore isnt too bad is he. All in all we should continue to get better with Rondo and Rayray back. Our bench seems real solid with above mentioned esp now that we have more faith in Avery.

GET KAMEN....
A few of us have been saying this all year. Find the 3rd team. Jermaine, Bradley, Dooling, Marquis, 2013 1st, Steimsma, rights to BEN PEPPER…any combination of those players can go.
RAY ALLEN as your 6th man, ala Jason Terry. Rondo starts ALWAYS. You people are way too high on Bradley. He has to lead the league in front rims and air balls. 1st team all defense if voting was today.

high risk but high reward
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=75f58w4
I think the kings accept this because they get young talent, and a veteran in oneal that could clean up that locker room
I dont know anything about this center but if anyone does know anything about him do you think he is worth it?
JuJuan some moore - January 28, 2012
almost a contender
1st- we have our captain back on board
2nd- chemistry is almost there
3rd- love the combo between pietrus and bass
4th- avery big D changer
5th- moore big O changer
6th- 4 winning streak and going
so now all we need is a starting center who can shoot, rebound, defend, run, bang players, and the heart of a champion to lead us to a banner 18.

and plus. . . . . .
give avery bradley a chance I know that we saw a lot of air balls and bricks but if you take a look at kobe bryant he had plenty of bricks and air balls on his rookie and sophomore year but look at kobe now making shots like its magic so give avery a shot let him learn and have the nba feeling and plus it kinda look like it had the same type of shot as kobe so give avery a chance who knows if he grew a little bit more taller lets just see and wait.

what a turnaround from a week ago
so what happens when we start rondo and ray and we have another 1st qtr where we score 16 points? I love what pietrus and bass bring to the table not to mention bradley and moore. the injuries to rondo and ray have been a huge blessingin disguise. avery and moore have developed confidence and pietrus wilcox and others are getting much needed pt. JO remains the one really weak spot on the roster but at least wilcox is now starting to play better. and I forgot about dooling but really where does he fit in on the depth chart now? have bradley and moore moved ahead of him?
Red2 - January 28, 2012
Pierce is using his left hand better than he ever has
watch the highlights from the past 4 games and look at how many times pierce is able to get to the hole using his left hand. he has become positively Bird-like with the left hand although he will never be able to shoot lefty like bird. teams aren’t expecting him to go left and it’s working great for him.
Red2 - January 28, 2012
the left hand is not new, or better, what's new is...
Pierce’s patience and court vision lately… with the task of directing the offense he’s seeing the dlow of developing plays better, and he has always had driving skill, just now, he is taking what defense gives, like Rondo or any PG would, and they were giving him the left side of the lane because his sweet spot is right elbow.
