Not to start a firestorm as a new blogger, but Is it time to start worrying about Rajon Rondo and his ailing right wrist?
After reading some of Steve Bulpett's article in the Boston Herald today it should give Celtics' fans some pause.
Here are a few excerpts from the article:
"It’s kind of depressing coming to the gym, because all I can do is dribble," Rondo said. "I can’t shoot. It hurts when I flick my wrist.
"I’ve just got to try to stay positive. I can’t try to force it, and when I am able to shoot again, I’ve got to catch back up."
"That’s why I’m not in a rush really — because it could get uglier than this," he said. "It’s pretty painful, so I don’t want to rush it."
It sounds like rest is going to be the best thing right now for Rondo, and hopefully Paul Pierce and the newfound youth in the backcourt can pick up the playmaking abilities with the starting point guard out. Even Doc Rivers noticed that Rondo is not able to do the things that he needs to do to get back on the court.
"He did a one-on-one drill and after about three minutes, we pulled him out because he just couldn’t finish," said Doc Rivers. "He couldn’t do anything. It’s tough to be a guard without a hand."
The situation is one that clearly needs to be monitored as Rondo was shooting a career best 51.7 percent from the floor and a modest 60 percent from the line.

sucks
but giving moore and bradley more minutes could prove valuable later in the season as it helps them develope

Sounds like a jammed wrist. He should be day to day.

Another injury that was downplayed when it happened
I know I will get crap from this, but just another case of the Celtics downplaying an injury to a key player – See KG in 2010 and Shaq last year. I have read that his wrist is at best 45 percent. If this is the case, he is probably going to be out another two weeks at a minimum and probably longer. While Moore and Bradley have looked good in spurts, the Celtics are going to be challenged to continue winning without Rondo.

Cosign.
Remember Rondo saying he just took a couple Advil and he’d be fine? I’ve gotten to the point where I just presume it’s worse than they’re saying — maybe it’s not worst-case, but if they say “it’s fine,” then I figure the guy will be out at least a few games. This way I don’t get my hopes up, and if they do come back sooner, great.
rocknrollforyoursoul - January 27, 2012
Also, Danny was interviewed the night of the injury and said Rondo was fine

The other question I have....
How the hell does Kobe continue to play with torn ligaments in his wrist? It makes no sense to me
vinnie - January 27, 2012
pain varies by injury and someone's threshold of pain
After having 4 knee injuries and 4 surgeries, (all basketball) there were some injuries I could play through because the meniscus was torn but not locking my knee …..there were others that were just too painful but less anatomically severe. I even played with a torn ACL with my knee wrapped tight as I could wrap it and that pain was not bad UNTIL your knee shifted and then it was the worst severe pain.
Pain is a weird thing, something torn can be less pain than something hitting a nerve, etc….
Master Po - January 27, 2012
I hear you
But it seems like Kobe is able to play through every injury — finger, knee, wrist — I don’t get it. Something doesn’t seem right when it comes to Kobe and injuries.
vinnie - January 27, 2012
Pierce has demonstrated similar toughness.
Celtsfansince55 - January 27, 2012
To be honest
I think kobe exaggerates so his “legacy” will be even more impressive
Kgwillkillyou - January 27, 2012 via mobile
Its been well reported about Kobe taking injections so we can play through his wrist pain
I guarantee he has taken them for many other injuries. Personally, I’m glad the Celtics don’t do this. It shows what little concern the LA medical staff has for its star player. Reminds me Varsity Blues.
KY Celts fan - January 27, 2012
Every injury is different, according to the areas of the body, and everyone experiences pain differently..
It may sound simplistic, but from personal experience of living with agonizing, at times, back pain, e.g., for more than 40 years now, and still playing tennis, ping pong and swimming, I do have an idea of training and playing through pain.
Although I’ve been fortunate in not having to undergo surgery yet, I’ve had to have cortisone shots in both knees, shoulder and back over a period of years, which has forestalled the surgery, so far.
The less active I am, the more the knees and back begin to seize up, which forces me to remain active as much as possible, e.g., which also means that sleeping for any extended period can be hazardous to my health, as it were. In order to avoid back spasms, prior to standing up after sleep, I have to spend several minutes doing movements I learned via the physiotherapy and chiropractic treatments I’ve received for a great many years.
The professional athlete today is surrounded with the best type of therapeutic and medical treatment available, and if an athlete isn’t able to perform today, it isn’t because of a simple cut on a finger or a sore.
That athlete is really hurting, and we, the fans and public, should try to be as understanding as possible, and hope that our own teams athletes will come off the injury list, sooner, rather than later, in such a way, as to be able to effectively contribute to the team.

Sprains hurt but he should be ok. If it was more serious they wouldn’t even let him try to practice.
Whetzell - January 27, 2012
Let the E'twaun Moore Era begin!
Seriously. Let him get all the rest he needs and live with the rook and Bradley’s growing pains.
yakyakyak - January 27, 2012
Better ball movement, better spacing, better shooting, better defense, better record...
maybe we need rondo to stay hurt fro a while!
mdowell04 - January 27, 2012
I'm sorry, but this idea that we are better off without Ray and Rondo is just silly.
This is a team game and we are going to need a variety of configurations to matchup against a wide variety of teams.
We have been able to go without Rondo against the Magic because of two things: Jameer Nelson can be gamed and Hedo is Paul Pierce’s huggable squeezable toy.
Other teams will have different strengths and weaknesses that will usually not line up the same way.
We need Rondo and we need Ray.
mmmmm - January 27, 2012
Agree with you 100 percent!
What? Did I just write that? But seriously, this line of thinking borders on crazy.
vinnie - January 27, 2012
I hate to say I told you so
But Po will vouch for me. The day after Rondo injured his wrist and the Celtics quacked day-to-day, I suggested he’d be out a minimum of 2-4 weeks. The reason: it became obvious last year that the Celtics medical staff had studied at the same school as the quacks who work for the Mets.
Celtsfansince55 - January 27, 2012
I am there with you
Rondo said he took 10 Advil and was fine. The night he was injured, Ainge said he was fine. In my eyes, the Celts’ medical staff has no credibility, but I am sure thy don’t care what I think.
vinnie - January 27, 2012
After the adrenaline wears off and ligaments begin to swell, things change a lot
It’s no surprise that Rondo and Ainge thought he would be fine after the game and then the injury suddenly seemed much worse the next day.
KY Celts fan - January 27, 2012
It it true ....C55...you did say that...and it is true of what you predicted.....I could off on a Danny rant right now ...but I shall refrain
Master Po - January 27, 2012
Expect to hear about Rondo needing
an operation on his wrist after he sits out the next 12 games.
Celtsfansince55 - January 27, 2012
This I the kind of thing that scares me with this medical staff
vinnie - January 27, 2012
Celtics Medical Staff
1. Read Pietrus’s remarks from a few days ago
2. Talk to Jeff Green
3. If an MD or Eddie LaCerte say a player can’t play, he doesn’t play. It’s not a coaches decision, not Danny’s decision and not the Owners decision.
I don’t know how long I’ve been on this Blog, but the Celtics don’t give out all the medical details on injuries. There are also some injuries where 1000 tests won’t show just what the problem is. Also, there are medical privacy issues. (The paper you sign without reading whenever you get something done in a hospital).
So leave Rondo’s wrist be and let’s start giving some love to the other guys playing the position and to Doc for how he’s handling it.
TrueGreen - January 27, 2012
Exactly. I don't understand all the conspiracy theories and wining over the med staff.
The only thing that makes me not react to it is that it happens with EVERY FREAKING TEAM. Celtic fans act as if this pattern of uncertainty over player health issues is only something that occurs with Celtic players – but it is simply a staple of professional sports.
Whether it is stressing over when KG would return to scream in the face of an opposing guard or when Clay Buchholz would return to sling some heat at the plate, fans act the same.
The simple truth may be hard to accept but the fact is, health issues are simply freaking hard to predict and also they are private and personal information. So fans need to just get over their sense of entitlement to know every detail of what is going on with these players.
If they are not able to play they are not able to play and that’s that. There is no magic med staff that is going to make them suddenly better.
mmmmm - January 27, 2012
Well put, mmmmm.
lygafe - January 27, 2012
I don't think there is a conspiracy about this ...my point is that I just have learned to NOT believe what they say
there is a DIFFERENCE between saying nothing, or saying “I just don’t know”, as opposed to making something seem very minor or throw out a misleading or false statement.
I would rather have Doc or Danny say “it’s none of your business – just watch the game to see if he is back in the lineup” than simply putting up some the charades they have put up. Why they would put up a Charade about an injury I have no idea as it makes no sense to do that for the most part , but the fact of the matter is that they have done that on occasion. I kind of get it if it is the playoffs and you want the other team to guess about your lineup and therefore not be as prepared, but during the season makes no sense to me.
Mostly I don’t care… LOL….I just don’t trust Danny LOL……
Master Po - January 27, 2012
"not believing what they say"
means either you think they are lying or incompetent (and incapable of saying believable things).
The former is conspiracy.
The latter is not really rational. Do you really think that pro sports organizations like the Celtics, Patriots, Red Sox (& a zillion other teams) would employ anything but the best med staff they could find, given the $Millions at stake? These guys are competent, but they are not gods.
mmmmm - January 27, 2012
it might just mean they have bad habits of never quite shooting straight with the press
and I actually have no issue with that either. Please mmmmm, my fellow blogger and Celtic lover, try to turn my words. A conspiracy is something different than being a liar. Much respect Po
by the way, I have the right to think DA is a kind of a weasel….and I do.
Peace
Master Po - January 27, 2012
i personally dont believe anything ainge says about injuries or trades
craziness@analltimehigh - January 27, 2012
Well, that's actually sorta legitimate
after all, part of Danny’s job is to lie – or at least to misdirect (a polite euphemism for ‘lying’).
I just don’t see any reason for folks to get all bent over it.
mmmmm - January 27, 2012
sometimes I am "actually sorta legitimate" LOL
Master Po - January 27, 2012
i understand the trade part of it
it;s the injury part that bugs me.
like when KG was going to come back in 2009….and we waited and waited and waited….then it happened again with shaq. if he doesnt know then i wished he’s just keep his mouth shut about it
craziness@analltimehigh - January 27, 2012
But what, exactly, did Danny say about either KG or Shaq's injuries
that has you all upset?
I don’t recall him saying anything that really mattered much on either.
mmmmm - January 27, 2012
just annoying
when he keeps saying every week they will be back soon, next week, playoffs, etc….every week the same thing different date. why say anything if you dont know? wouldnt it be better to just say i dont know rather than get the fan bases hopes up of a return? IDK maybe its just me but it rubs me the wrong way. thats the only real thing i dont like about ainge
craziness@analltimehigh - January 27, 2012
Yes, that is your right
I’m just not sure it makes a lot of sense to the rest of us.
And you have to understand that for those of us who look at what Danny has been doing in, perhaps a more ‘cold’ light, and actually admire it from a ‘professional’ standpoint – it seems a bit hurtful for you to keep casting insults at him.
Sorta like if you were insulting Hello Kitty in front of my 3 year old. You might have the right to do so – but it would sort of seem unnecessarily hurtful.
I guess if I understood better WHY you have such a raging hate on for Danny I would understand. But it escapes me so far.
mmmmm - January 27, 2012
Note - I also don't understand why certain 'Celtic fans' think it is cool to equate some of our players with 'trash'.
So I guess I am just missing something.
mmmmm - January 27, 2012
as a counter argument, it makes no sense to me of why people take it so personal to have me be critical of a GM
and I FOR THE RECORD, I scolded a fan on here the other day for equating Paul Pierce as trash, that was terrible, but his right. The only player I think I have ever found without merit of any kind was Mark Blount and he was garbage.
Master Po - January 27, 2012
LOL
Touche’.
mmmmm - January 27, 2012
When someone can't watch a game without a brace on their wrist,
they’re prospects of playing can’t really be “day to day”, it seems to me.
alley oop - January 27, 2012
Don't Know When You Were Born
But do you remember Larry Bird. In his latter years Bird would play a game, go to New England Baptist Hospital immediately after the game to be put in traction and come back to win the next game for the celtics. Also, I don’t think Rondo was wearing a brace last nite.
As mmmmm basically says, Rondo will play when he’s ready to play and there’s nothing we can do about it. And we cant’ guess about it either. Besides, many on this Blog complain that Doc doesn’t play Rooks. Well, he’s playing them now and it’s fun to watch. It will also make us a better team come playoff time.
TrueGreen - January 27, 2012
yeah I do like the fact that injuries force Doc to play rooks and that leads to some surprises
Master Po - January 27, 2012
It's Almost Game Time
And here’s Mike and Tommy!!!!!!! Haven’t heard anything yet, but maybe we’ll have a “here’s Rondo”. Then what will all of us spending all this time on Rajon’s wrist wish we were doing instead?
