Potential 2012 Free Agents Dropping Like (Well Paid) Flies

The worst kept secret around was that Kevin Love was going to sign an extension. So sure enough, he did.

Kevin Love signs a contract extension with a curious opt-out clause | Ball Don't Lie - Yahoo! Sports

First, everyone applaud Love and the Timberwolves for signing what could turn into a four-year, $62 million contract extension. Then, everyone freak out as we realize that Love has an opt-out clause after the third year of the deal, should the next three seasons of Love's career resemble anything like his first three seasons with the Timberwolves. Even though the Wolves have made significant progress in Love's fourth season, winning seven of their first 17 games, the team is three games out of the Western playoff bracket and still has quite a lot to do in order to put together the sort of roster that can be counted on for multiple postseason appearances.

Star-divide

Joining him is Danilo Gallinari:

Danilo Gallinari agrees to four-year, $42 million extension with Nuggets - Sam Amick - SI.com

Denver Nuggets small forward Danilo Gallinari has agreed to a four-year, $42 million extension that will keep him with the Nuggets through 2016, two sources told SI.com.

Next up could be Eric Gordon.

Eric Gordon's Extension - At The Hive

By allowing the Hornets to negotiate a 4 year deal with Gordon today, Stern opened up the third possibility - getting a healthy Gordon for below market value. Of course, the third possibility also implies the existence of a significantly less pleasant fourth option - paying tens of millions of dollars a year to a player that can't play any more, and it's up to the medical staff to determine Gordon's long term injury prognosis. But yesterday's news, an independent New York doctor calling his knee "structurally sound," was a clear step forward.

Meh

All restricted free agents whom other teams had very little chance of acquiring anyways. I’m surprised they didn’t try and play a little more hard ball but waiting til the summer to sign a new contract.

Oh well. Minny should actually be a pretty exciting team to watch for a few seasons.

Should the Celtics pursue Michael Beasley over the summer? The Wolves don’t seem too interested in him, and he’s got a ton of upside. He would be great paired with Jeff Green, or in place of him. Or are his personal problems too big to overlook?

Do you want a pothead on the team?
hey easy there on the potheads

Don’t you recall that the Chief was found with a substantial amount of ganja in his trunk during a traffic stop late in his career?

It would surprise you how many basketball players smoke

I would say over 75 percent

i agree most of them ddrink alot so wat though the smoke nothing

Exer123, put down the pipe.

we had delonte west on the team

twice.

yes

No doubt. I would have taken Wilt, Parish, Kareem…. or any of the other large number or basketball pothead greats.

ha actually

You wouldn’t have drafted Aaron Hernandez to the pats?

We absolutely should pursue Michael Beasley this offseason

If not sooner via trade.

Yes, the kid has his issues but he’s still has a crazy amount of talent and untapped potential.

Look people, Cp3 didn’t want to come here. D12 doesn’t want to come here. Stop by pining after unattainable players. We may just have to take some risks and hope for the best. Young guys like Beas and OJ Mayo may be projects, but fans need to stop acting like we’re to good to take on project players.

Back to the drawing board
No Beasley

as you asked: are his personal problems too big to overlook?

Yes

Give me Omer Asik and O.J Mayo or Shanon Brown!!
Beasley is not one of the best options we would like and he sure has a lot of personal problems

but acquiring him doesn’t sound very unrealistic compared to other big name free agents. We have a strong locker room and it is worth a try at right price.

sorry wrong place
shanon brown has no shot every inconstin
OT-- Marshon Brooks

Guys, did we blow it by letting Brooks get away…. to a division rival no less?

We drafted Marshon FOR NJ

It was part of the trade for JJJ. There was never any indication the C’s were picking him otherwise.

Exactly

We never ‘let him get away’ because we never wanted him.

And I still don’t want him. Long term, JJ will be much more valuable.

Don’t be mislead by short term volume scoring by a player on a bad team.

IMHO i think we should be looking for a center who can both defend and score. And for the right price Id gamble on Beas. If the lakers can contain a Metta World Peace im pretty sure a Celtics locker room canhandle a Beas.

Beasley has a lot of talent

But he is a ball stopper. Have to think long and hard on that one.

Kevin Love

I would have loved Kevin Love… Eric Gordon is alright, but not the kind of max player Danny keeps hinting at. Gallinari… what a disappointing that pick up would have could have.

he is the the best player to pair up with Howard

with good 3pt range to let Howard man the interior alone, and kickout if double teamed. And obviously, not a liability with rebounding. if only he reached free agency, the C’s has a very nice chance on him, then if signed, Howard hill now be intrigued with our lineup and think again to take a chance on Celtics. but apparently, this is impossible now, i wonder what’s on Danny’s mind now.

players we could go after

Derrick Favors (trade)
OJ Mayo (free agency or trade)
Rudy Gay (trade)
Kirk Hinrich (Free agency)
Omer asik (Free agency)
Roy Hibbert (Free agency)
Eric Gordon (Free agency)
Andrew Bynum (if the lakers decline his team option)
Michael Beasley (Free agency)
Robin Lopez (Free agency)
Batum/Wallace (if the trailblazers only sign one)
JaVale McGee (free agency)
there are a few more that we could try to trade for that the team they are on doesnt want them for what they want to be paid.
is there a championship team in there?
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?page=FreeAgents-11-12

Basically, the 2012 offseason is 'Dwight Howard or Bust!'
Aren't most of these guys restricted?

I think the only unrestricted one is Bynum.

yeah most of them are

i dont think hinrich is but that link shows all the free agencts. but i doubt more than 1 or 2 gets a max contract so we can get them if we are willing to pay

My quick list

of semi-desirable unrestricted free agents next summer:

Okur
Kaman
Hinrich
Tolliver

Pretty harsh… although I can’t remember where I found the original list so don’t take my word for it

I wouldnt be surprised if we see

Tim Duncan on our team next year

I would
OJ Mayo and Michael Beasley???

Why not bring back Sidney Wicks and Curtis Rowe and maybe Todd Day? Rogerio has removed Nocioni from his wish list and inserted OJ Mayo. That shows some consistentcy as a handicapper, I’ll grant you that. . Michael Beasley is Delonte West plus 4-5 inches. And I’d take Delonte for his effort (which does put him on injured reserve a lot). But you don’t construct a team around such defectives. You destruct a team. You want talent but you also want glue. These guys have never had glue in their lives and you can’t really fix that now. Please keep them away from the Celtics. Danny knows that. He takes his chances – Rasheed Wallace comes to mind. But that was only for a 10 min game piece of the puzzle.

Of the names mentioned above Javale McGee is very intriguing and I have always been partial to Gerald Wallace. For the reasons Kevin Love would have been great you just can’t expect Minnesota to be dumb forever. He was not going to happen. That’s why we need to either get terrible to get better or have Danny pull a draft rabbit out of his hat. Forget about gambling on broken guys. They were broken in childhood and Danny-Doc-etc can’t fix that.

Good one, Wildblu1.

Right or wrong, anyone who tosses up Sidney Wicks and Curtis Rowe to make a point gets a grin out of me.

I would try to go after Javale in that list. Play Rondo and Avery on 1 and 2. Brandon on 4 and Paul on 3 that would be a very potent line up that would outplay a lotta of teams.

ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!

Trade with Utah. I like Favors. Perhaps we pick up

Kanter or Hayward as well. Young talent that is beginning to blossom.

i dont think there is any way in hell we could get both

favors and kanter. i think we could get favors jefferson bell and harris for rondo pierce and allen. we give up a lot but we get a lot too. we use 6 million of next seasons cap space so we still have a ton of cap space. we get a good pg (although still worse than rondo) but a huge upgrade at center. the only problem is we keep oneal and dont get a SF back so it could use some tweaking or a second trade but its possible
