Rajon Rondo is the only thing keeping the Celtics from taking on the appearance of a dying noble family. This year Rondo has elevated himself in the organization. The Boston Celtics are now "his team" and he's earned it. Every drive to basket is vicious and looks more like a swift military infiltration than it does a basketball play. He's increased his scoring average by almost five points this year, and takes an average of two shots more with a higher shooting percentage than ever before. He sometimes finds himself as the number one scoring option, an odd position to be in for a player whose shooting form at times resembles someone shooting with kidney stones.
The Celtics now rely on him to be at his best at all times, or the entire operation will fail. It is definitely his team now, but is that necessarily a good thing?

Jackie MacMullan isn't exaggerating when she says the Celtics looked "old, slow, and sloppy" against the Mavericks. If Rondo wasn't playing, the Celtics would have looked like a team undergoing a stroke. Right now, Rondo is the sole reason for the Celtics not sounding every panic alarm they can find. Ray Allen has played well, but Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce haven't looked like the players they used to be, even the ones from last year. If the Big 4 isn't at least performing at an overall level of "average", then the Celtics truly are the Holy Roman Empire of the NBA.
If anyone thinks that Rondo can play at this high a level for the entire season, they are, to put it lightly, out of their minds. No human being as that type of physical endurance, at least to my knowledge. Lance Armstrong circa 2003 could be running the point and still collapse of high blood pressure at game 45. There is just no way he can keep this up.
It is even awkward right now. Rondo is by far the most well-equipped to being an athlete at this point in time, and looks like he is playing with physically unfit men. That obviously isn't true, but Rondo is so far ahead of the rest of the team in terms of his style of play and tempo that it just doesn't seem right. Can you imagine Rondo playing for Mike D'Antoni? He would average 20 assists a game and move back time. Instead, Rondo is trapped with an aging team more suited for a half-court offense than the transition one Rondo so obviously wants to engage in. It doesn't make sense for Rondo, clearly Boston's best player, to change his style, so the Celtics are allowing him to play his own game.
That really can only work for so long. It's somewhat worked so far, but it's difficult to play two different offenses for a long period of time, obviously. Teams will eventually figure out a way to suffocate Rondo, which will be like cutting off seven of an octopuses' eight tentacles (can they grow back? I don't know how that works). Once Rondo is removed from the picture, it will be hard for the Celtics to win games. It is also difficult to assume a player can play at a high level every night, so what happens on off nights? The nights where Rondo is suddenly akin to turnovers and clanking every damn free throw? Should we just chalk that up as an automatic loss?
To be so reliant on a player, as the Celtics are doing, is dangerous. Without much help from supporters, it is hard to imagine the Celtics being successful this season. That said, Pierce can turn it around, and Allen has played well this season. It may not be a lost cause. But if game after game happens where Rondo is the sole breadwinner, then it is definite cause for concern. If we haven't reached that point already.
"Rajon's amazing, period. You talk about big things are coming, big things are here. Rajon's keeping us alive every night, we just have to make sure we follow his lead, follow his effort, and we're going to turn this thing around. We're a group of hard-working guys; you do the hard work and then you start to see lights. That's what it is."
KG's right about one thing. Rondo is playing out of his mind. But to say "big things are coming" seems like an odd thing to say after a loss in which the non-Rondo portion of the tempo was nothing more than viscous. Rondo can play as fantastically as he wants, but that only goes so far without support. Yes, I realize this is very depressing.

Comes
to mind why DA offered Jeff Green 9M and they hinted last season Pierce coming off the bench because JG can help Rondo fast on transition play. Problem is they don’t have a strong rebounding Center to finish the defensive stop.

Has been for about 2 seasons
The Cs go as Rondo goes, once that was apparent – the team became Rondo’s
cocofan - January 13, 2012
Yep.
This is totally true.
mmmmm - January 13, 2012
This is true
KD1 - January 13, 2012
Well
This is the first we’ve ever seen him take on the scoring load at times…and the first time Doc has ever come out and said HE’S OUR GUY.
Brendan O'Hare - January 13, 2012
If you're worried about Rondo keeping up this pace now--
the news that Dooling will be out with a ‘knee problem’ should really be a concern.
What’s Doc going to turn to, a Bradley and Daniels backcourt?
Let’s just hope Dooling’s problem is really minor and short-lived.
clover - January 13, 2012
Eh, Dooling is not a point guard either
Bottom line is, like most of the past few years, the Celtics do not have a backup guard who can run the offense. As for Dooling, I am sure his knee problem will be day-to-day. :)
vinnie - January 13, 2012
Ha! That may be, but anything that tempts Doc to play Rondo for more minutes is cause to worry.
clover - January 13, 2012
get ish smith!
a poor mans rondo. good enough for a backup pg.
ball is green - January 13, 2012
Looking from a different angle
If pace is the issue, will an elite slow-pace PG (e.g. Nash, Kidd) work better for this Celtics team?
getthat18now - January 13, 2012
LOL!
it worked with Dallas last year. :D

The Bulls' are Rose's team but it doesn't mean that offense is produced solely by him.
We’ve always been talking about this: Rondo finally taking over this Celtics as the Big 3 slowly declines with age. With the expiring contracts of KG and Allen then the timing is just right. Who knows maybe if he continues this all season that would entice Howard or other FA’s to join Boston to play with him. The only concern that I have is that right now, Rondo is not as strong or creative as Rose to really take over this team. If scoring at this rate will help to develop his offensive arsenal to a higher level then so be it. There will be nights where he will struggle (even great players like Kobe or Wade does) but this being his team means offense will revolve around him and hopefully everyone else will follow suit with their contributions.

Not good
To me Rondo is an amazing half player.
Why? Because he’s great when driving to the hoop, but there are no other options because he can’t shoot. Fantastic asisst man? Sure, but he looks for assist even when he’s left wide open.. Amazing steals? Yeah, but what about his defense one-on-one?
The thing he can do, he does them at best. The problem is about what he CAN’T do.. :(
Celtic in Rome - January 13, 2012
This sounds like...
something that would have been trendy to say 3 weeks ago before Rondo started knocking down j’s regularly
ianboyextreme - January 14, 2012
good
He is more then good enough to be the best player on this team but he has to have guys around him who can consistently hit shots. He doesn’t have that night in and night out right now due to the age of our primary scorers and the inconsistency that comes with advanced age in the NBA.
Is it ideal? Probably not. Ideally Rondo is your 2nd best player and your best player is an elite scorer but we don’t have that as we speak and it might not be an easy get either. You can win a whole lot of games surrounding Rondo with great shooters which is what we have been these past couple of seasons.
A teams best player doesn’t need to be it’s highest scorer IMO for that team to be successful. A team can be very successful with a great pass first PG but you need multiple shooters around him and right now we have Ray Allen and no one else(until Pierce gets his legs anyways)
CelticsFanNC - January 13, 2012
That's the problem, Rondo can't be the best player on a team that wants to win it all
Rondo is a great PG and he’s definitely playing at a high level, the ceiling just isn’t as high for a point guard with his scoring ability. His jumper has improved, so has his confidence, but teams can still sag off of him and live with the results. He still disappears for stretches. Compared to the other great point guards in this league he is the most dependent on having finishers (and the big 3 are certainly not coming through on their end). We’ve said the Celtics go as Rondo goes for about 3 years, but if he wanted to show people he is a top 5 PG this year is the perfect opportunity. I know he showed flashes he could be the best PG last year, but if he can play anywhere near that level this year he would show he is worth building around. Right now I don’t think anyone would build a team around Rondo with Rondo being the best player, of course as the complement to 1 or 2 stars he would great.
kg2128 - January 13, 2012
disagree
In spite of his inconsistency and lack of a jumper he has been the best player on the Celtics for the past several seasons. Had injuries not happened they might have won another title with Rondo as the teams best player.
He seems to be even better this season but the guys around him are a shadow of the players they were in 2007-08.
CelticsFanNC - January 13, 2012
I love Rondo but.....
what good is it if he slashes to the basket to get to the free throw line and either makes 1 of 2 or 0 of 2? That means instead of potentially 2-3 points a possession, we come away with 0 or 1 point. I cannot recall a top 10 PG guard in the history of the NBA who makes about 58% of his free throws. This will keep him from being among the elites and one of the reasons why we looked hard at Chris Paul. He has a better all around game.
With that said, Rondo is our guy and he will have to play a big role this year to get back to the finals. But, look around the league and watch the injuries pile up. Melo out with a sprained ankle. Horford out a long time. Wade is hurting. Rose has turf too. As we know too well, injuries change a season quickly. I am not wishing injury on any opponents, but who knows who will be healthy come the playoffs? Especially this short season, health is going to be a big part in who wears the crown this year.
JPV - January 13, 2012
What good is it?
Well, the more he does it, the more practice he gets making FTs ‘in game’. Everyone who watches him practice says he sinks them like a machine in practice. Eventually one would hope he’ll get consistency in games. Heck, I watch him and I see the same consistency issue: When he holds his body still or moves his head forward slightly into the shot, he sinks his FT. When he lets his body fall away – even slightly – he misses. That’s a consistency issue and is correctable only through repetition. But since this kind of ‘wobble’ is probably subject to tempo, exhaustion and concentration – he needs repetition in game situations.
The other ‘good’ about it is that it helps get the other team into foul trouble, which is always a good thing.

Love Rondo but......
Personally, I am tired of hearing how great Chris Paul is. If you look at their stats, they are almost identical. Yes, CP has a better free throw % but averages half the attempts. Aggressiveness goes to Rondo. Rondo has more assists and would have even more if the rest of the Celts would make the shots he sets them up for. Rondo’s average points per game has fallen, beginning at the same time as Pierce’s return to the lineup. Rondo averages almost twice the rebounds as CP. The only area where CP has a definite edge and Rondo needs to tighten up is turnovers. Stats don’t tell the whole story, but they also don’t lie.
DENNEE - January 13, 2012
I wonder if there's friction between him and Paul and Ray
how many shot attempts did those guys get in the last game? Isn’t it rondo’s job to get them the ball? Was it because they played badly or because rondo took most of the shots? When doc says guys have to get out of his way who is he talking about? I don’t think it’s kg. I htink it’s ray and paul. When ray dribbles the ball up the court I’m not sure that’s something doc wants. ray is a disaster with the ball in his hands. He can’t even outlet a rebound safely. Rondo also has a tendency to take the last shot of the quarter. I gotta believe that pisses Pierce off a bit and probably ray as well. Pierce isn’t ready for this to be rondo’s team so doc’s comments probably aren’t sitting well with Pierce and ray at the moment.
Red2 - January 13, 2012
Like you, I don't have a personal relationship inside their locker room, so I don't know ... but I doubt it.
I see no basis to assume any such negative attitudes on their part. These guys have too much mileage together and have never shown such pettiness before. It would seem bizarrely out of character.
mmmmm - January 13, 2012
I don't really think this is new - our offense has gone as Rondo goes for at least the last 2 years.
He’s just starting to assume a bigger share of the points-scored pie.
All of the Big 3, Doc & Danny have talked at various times about Rondo taking more and more ownership of this team since he signed his contract extension.
mmmmm - January 13, 2012
Pace is not the issue here. The issue is that our half-court game has been reduced to taking bad 18-foot jumpers, and our defense is nonexistent.
kozlodoev - January 13, 2012
But... why don't trust Rondo ?
In the 2010 playoff’s run, Garnett was without a knee… Even Pierce had a Knee Problem, with the liquid that formed in the knees. Rondo has led our team Into the Finals… The Celtics have slowed afther the Rondo’s Problem. Do you rember the shots of dwight at his back ?
For Me Rondo is one of the top 10 Nba Player, definitely the best p.g.
Come On Rondo, Lead the team right now…
ElProducto - January 13, 2012
The fact that he’s lead the team mostly to losses kind of works against your theory.
kozlodoev - January 13, 2012
He can't do it alone.
Nobody could.
Sizzlack - January 13, 2012
Well
Kobe can, no?
SparzWizard - January 13, 2012
Um, did you watch that team before the Gasol trade, when Kobe was demanding to be traded?
So no, nobody can do it alone.
Sizzlack - January 13, 2012
Rondo
I posted the same thought last year when everyone wanted his head for not fast-breaking. As I said then, it does no good to have a 1on4 or 1on 5 break, even if you are LeBron James or Michael Jordan. I think he deserves a lot of credit for adjusting his game all of these years to fit what the big 3 needed.
What is most scary in this sudden outburst: is he doing it because that is now what is asked of him? Or is it so he can show what his real capabilities are so he can get big money somewhere else, because in his heart he still thinks Ainge is going to ship him?
DENNEE - January 13, 2012
Celtics is
doomed if this is Rondo’s team. He can only do layups and sometimes he misses them, he can only make half of the free throws given to him. The only elite about him is his assist pct. he can’t carry this team alone. KG, Pierce, and JO had to do their thing when they were 10 years younger.
kheldar52077 - January 16, 2012
Rondo the magician
He disappears when you need him the most Wha La
