Submit Your Nominations: Worst. Celtic. Ever.

Time to take out your angst on some poor, unsuspecting, under-performing slob of yesteryear.  Nominate the worst Celtics ever and we'll put them to vote in a day or so.  I'll even pick some of your explanations to add to the post - so feel free to get creative when you state your case.

And if we have enough fun with this, we might even have to stretch it out to a starting 5 lineup.

Have fun.

Stephon Marbury

he was average as a celtic. a decent back up pg,
I think...

Eric Fernstein from the early 80 Celtic teams was the worst Celtic ever.

With Greg Kite coming in a close 2nd.

Fernsten
My error..

Thanks for the name spelling correction .

Kite

I suggest a look back at the Finals where he played his ass off when no one else was available to play center. This “award” should go to someone who sucked and didn’t try or care, not someone who used his limited talents to the best of his abilities.

If Kite had been around in 2010 there might well be another banner in the rafters.
At least he would have landed 6 hard fouls on Pau.

No need to look back at the 87 finals...

as I saw every single minute of those finals games and the minutes Kite played.

I agree Kite played hard, gave it his best effort and played to the most of his abilities.

The problem is the best of his abilities was limited since he was a overall limited skilled player and and at least I think one of the worser Celtic players (talent wise – not effort wise) to wear a Celtic Uniform.

Just my 2 cents though.

Kite

You know I don’t see Kite being that far from Perk.

Rick Pitino

What didn't he do to destroy the franchise?

Nearly did too.

Greg Kite.

Was there anything he did well?

yes

I suggest a look back at the Finals where he played his ass off when no one else was available to play center. This “award” should go to someone who sucked and didn’t try or care, not someone who used his limited talents to the best of his abilities.

Theo Ratliff?

2 games, 44min, 5 points, 6 PF

Allah Abdulnaby
Who?!

Wow! Don’t even remember him!

I remember him..

but care to forget him…lol

I remember him

and was actually watching ESPN classic the other night and they were showing a game between the Celts and Hornets (Charlotte) from the second round of the playoffs in 1992. We had D. Brown, Sherman Douglas, Abdulnaby, Lewis and some other bum out there. It brought back bad memories of life after Bird….I think actually Bird was still on the team then, but he was out because of his back that year, and then he retired the next year. Awful team. Can’t believe they were in the playoffs.

Michael Smith

has to be up there for at least one of the worst #1 draft picks. So would Joe Forte and Jerome Moiso.

like the Forte pick

well, not the pick, you know what I mean

I hate Giddens... We pass Chalmers and Deandre Jordan(!)

Yeah, I was gonna say him but he played some good D.

DWAYNE SCHINTZIUS.

Horrible, with or without the face mask, with or without the mullet.

Patrick O’Bryant and Gerald Green.

no way on gerald green

anyone that can do this is okay in my book

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRkY4Fa17pA

Brett Szabo

was pretty bad. So was Bruno Sundov.

That’s kind of rough on Shelden Williams getting the featured photo on this post, tho, ha! Although…come to think of it…has there been many Celtics who had a worse performance in a Finals game? That is not-ha, now that I think of it.

Hey, watch it buddy
Sheldon Williams.

anybody?

Got to be Sheldon

If he would have gave us some solid minutes in game 7 even without Perk who knows.

happy to hear categories too

worst draft pick
worst free agent signing
worst contract

Sebastian Telfair....a disgrace to humanity!

Glen Davis.

Sebastian Telfair honorable mention.

Davis isn't the worst Celtic ever
Glen Davis?

Put down the haterade

Rick Fox

an insult to the title of celtics captain, he escaped to the lakers and wore #17 to mock us not getting banner 17 before the lakers won one with him. Not to mention he continued to creates reasons to hate him after his retirement, such as his tv commentary and his appearance on dancing with the starrs (ugh!)

Can't stand Rick Fox

But if you’re strictly talking playing ability, then he wasn’t the worst ever.

"Pretty Ricky" is so easy to hate!
you make it sound

like he wanted to leave for LA. he did not. he wanted to stay but the team wouldn’t tender him a contract.

There’s no reason he should get as much hatred as he does here. Brian Shaw on the other hand, that’s the guy who wanted off the C’s to be a Laker.

and the worst Celtics is

Ron Mercer. Just to mention one.

shelden williams and mikki moore. tie

Paddy O’Blount is EASILY the worst Celtic free agent signing ever.

Sydney Wicks and Curtis Rowe

Throw Jim Ard in there too.

I immediately thought of Wicks and Rowe

Just because of their W’s and L’s don’t show up on paychecks attitudes.

Rowe and Wicks..................

As a Cs fan, can’t think of one without the other……….and them being the epitome of selfishness and anti-Celtic pride….they were Blount before Blount was probably even born…the rickety, heartless broken down useless bridge between the Cowen Cs and the Bird Cs

Vin Baker by a mile
Worst trade -- getting Rafe Lafrentz
Easily...

I have always despised the Raef trade. I had a lot of love in my heart for Antoine, but for Danny to just dump him for one of the worst contracts in NBA history was dumbfounding…plus, everyone knew how bad his knees were.

Yes, I realize Raef led to Theo which led to Ray, but there were other other pumped up contracts we could have come up with to get Ray.

getting Vin Baker was worse IMO
Worst Draft Pick

Michael Smith

Yep to Mike Smith

Great announcer, terrible player…could have drafted Shawn Kemp instead. To this day I still can only imagine how awesome the C’s would have been with the Reign Man playing alongside the Big 3.

Smith...

was no doubt one of the worser Celtics in history .

I still have visions of him taking his awkward perimeter shot and getting it blocked on numerous occasions.

Just imagine, Red on draft day said Smith reminded him of Larry Bird.
Boy was Red wrong…lol

worst trade ever Joe Johnson for Tony Delk

worst celtic ever scott pollard

it was JJ

and change for Delk and Rodney Rodgers. It wasn’t a bad deal in terms of results that year.

In hindsight, they should have traded Kedrick Brown instead. (actually, I thought JJ looked good that year and KB looked horrid and I would have done the deal differently then). Also should have kept Rodgers around another year or two to make the deal a little more worth it.

I agree...

If you are going to trade away a promising rookie for solid veteran playoff leadership, then you should at least keep that veteran around a little while. It wasn’t like he was about to retire. Delk stuck around a little while, though and he was so horrible.

sorry...

I mean’t Delk WASN’T so horrible. He had a role on this team.

patrick obryant

He's definitely up there
Ricky Davis

Ricky Davis. I hated watching him play. He was a superstar wannabe with nowhere near the game to match. Never took a charge and didn’t want it enough to get to the line. I hated how he would dribble the ball backwards all the way to the center line so he could “direct” players, accomplishing little but looking like a douche and slowing things down.

Before he arrived in 2004, the Celtics were playing some of the most entertaining basketball they had in forever. They went up and down the floor, setting up quickly on offense. They had reeled off 5 straight wins before the trade against some good competition too. After acquiring the “offensively gifted” Davis, they went back to sludge ball and couldn’t score for their life.

Dan Dickou

On December 17, 2005, as a member of the Celtics, his season was ended by a ruptured Achilles tendon sustained while playing the Chicago Bulls. At the time, he was averaging 3.3 points per game and 2.1 assists per game. On June 28, 2006, the Boston Celtics traded Dickau, center Raef LaFrentz and the 7th pick in the 2006 NBA Draft to the Trail Blazers for center Theo Ratliff and guard Sebastian Telfair. Dickau was then sent to the Knicks along with Randolph only to be waived when the Knicks acquired Jared Jordan. Two days later, Dickau signed with the Clippers.12

On October 1, 2008, Dickau signed with the Golden State Warriors. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed per team policy.3 He played in two preseason games. Against the Portland Trail Blazers on October 8, Dickau played 21 minutes and scored 8 points and grabbed 5 rebounds.4 On October 19, 2008, Dickau was waived by the Warriors. On September 23, 2009, Dickau accepted an invitation to the Phoenix Suns training camp.5 He was waived by the Suns on October 21.6 With the Suns, Dickau played in five preseason games.7

Don’t you mean An Ickou? He had no D

BLOUNT...simply worst!
seriously Mark Blount???

He was first signed by the Boston Celtics as a free agent on August 1, 2000 and led the team with 76 blocks that season, the most by a Celtics rookie since Kevin McHale in 1980–81.

During the 2003–04 NBA season, Blount emerged as a dependable center, putting up 10.3 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 1.29 blocks per game in 29.3 minutes per game. He had a 28-point, 21-rebound game vs. the Orlando Magic on March 1, 2004. dude was close to be a double double guy….. there are probably 100 guys worse than him from the Cs at least 20 in the past 10 years, most of them at the same position.

Nate's shot selection

…wordaapp?

Gugliotta for a season…post HGH and performance enhancers.

Stojko Vrancovic

Sweet god what a sled! Remember the vaunted 55 inch vert he was supposed to possess??

Dickretro???? wow......my old friend...how in the hell are you?
PO!

Ahhh my old friend! All is well and I hope the same is going on for you. Are you still in the chat on game nights?? I have to start wetting my beak again if this season ever starts…

IF ....is the middle two letters of Life old man !
I actually like Stojko...

I think head coach Chris Ford and the C’s never gave him a real shot to prove himself.

I actually followed his game when he played in Europe and he was considered a pretty decent European player thus the reason he made the Croatian national team so often.

Though he lacked offensive skills, he was a athletic big, had length, decent rebounding skills and was a great shot blocker.
I actually think he could of been one of the top 3 shot blockers in Celtic history if given the chance, since he was so good at it as he showed in his short stints with the C’s.

I think if he had been given some more court time with the Celtics he could of developed into a serviceable big man.
One interesting rumor with Stojko was he was playing with 1 eye (the other was alleged to be blind due to injury).
If this was true Stojko deserves some credit for playing as well as he did (at least in Europe) with such a handicap.

Mark Blount

….because he played pretty well until he got paid and then he stopped playing hard.

how 'bout... "Never Nervous"...

Pervis Ellison ! (teamates with another bust… Eric Montross!)

YESS

Can’t believe this thread went like 70 posts deep before Pervis got a mention!

Honestly, even though a lot of us love the guy (myself included) the worst is probably Brian Scalabrine

Kedrick Brown

speaking of busts….

i was te say marty conlon, but he was not as atrociuous as i thought he was.

Mark Blount
Vin Baker
Sebastan Telfair

If win shares are your thing...

Your worst career Celtic is: John Mahnken, 1950-53. In 199 games, he averaged 3.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and shot 31.7% from the floor in 10 minutes per game. That was all good for -1.1 win shares.

Recent selections include Avery Bradley, Bruno Sundov, Jerome Moiso, and Stephon Marbury.

Link

If you prefer PER, Wayne Kreklow (1981) is the worst among guys playing 20+ games, putting up a sparkling -1.9 PER. (Across 25 games, he averaged 1.2 points, 0.5 rebounds, 0.4 assists, and 23.4% shooting in 4 minutes per game.)

Based upon draft position, production, opportunity, etc.

I’m going with Jerome Moiso. It would be hard to be much worse.

Sweet stats crunching, Roy

rec that previous post

Robey

I used to hate every time Rick Robey was coming into a game. I was a kid but I can remember cringing at his presence. He may not have been statistically the worst player ever but for one person to make me hate watching a team I loved so much he must have been bad. He was an oaf, a blob, a big slow doughboy!

One good thing Robey did ..

was it allowed Red to make one of the greatest trades in NBA history when he traded Robey straight up for Dennis Johnson who immensely helped the C’s win 2 titles.

the other good thing he did

was set a monster pick on Andrew Toney in a Sixers/C’s game that had Toney crash into him at high speed and bounce back a good 6-7 feet while Robey never moved and just stood there staring down as his sorry ass.

One of my favorite memories from the early 80’s

I...

do not vividly recall that pick incident but …Robey no doubt did have a role on the team of being a physical player and banger off the bench.

I loved the tandem of him and Mchale coming off the bench as they were 2 big dudes who utilized there size well (especially Robey).
I loved it when Johnny Most use to call the 2 of them thumper and bumper….lol

My favorite Rick Robey memory was (it was either in 82 or 83) when he outplayed Kareem when the Lakers visited the Garden duirng a regular season game.

I can not recall if Parish was injured, out with foul trouble, but Robey had to fill in at center for some reason and he did a great job not only muscling Jabbar on the defensive end of thew court and throwing Jabbar off his offensive game, but Robey himself played a great offensive game himself.

Eric Montross

yeah the big dope from UNC was suppose to be a beast. He ended up being a tic. A money sucking franchise tick. Although Ron Mercer is probably right there as well.

I agree

Absolutely awful!

Vin Baker

Wasn’t the worst on the court- but the effect of his contract and personal problems killed the team.

hard yo be objective

1.blount
2,baker
3. montross

MARK BLOUNT

Like TB not a single shadow of a doubt.
His hands were simply like a 2 year old in a 7 foot body.

I base my desition on how much BAD playing time and
what player hurt my team the must

Scal you were close. Like you Gerald Green

Worst Celtic ever

AJ Wynder

Most Hated: Blount
Most wasted talent: Baker
Most talentless: Moiso, Fernsten, Michael Smith and the one I can’t believe hasn’t made the list yet—-the ever popular former first round pick: Darren Tillis!

SHELDEN WILLIAMS???????????

I have to admit Im a bit angry that Sheldon was on your cover photo of this, the guy stepped in HUGE when big baby went down and there was talk at the time that he should see more minutes than baby…baby comes back plays mediocre and sheldon loses his time and becomes a goat because of one stupid play in the finals? and the play didnt even cost them the title lets be honest…..this is coming from the same group of people im sure that saw Scal as a demi-god….sickening

worst ever

telfair

we have a winner

wicks and rowe the penultimate anti-celtics.

Rick Pitino.

Now I’ll read the thread to see how many agree. What an absolute bum.

worst ever starting team

So I’m going to go for starting five worst ever taking into account non celtic traits:
pg dan dickau
sg jr giddens
sf michael smith
pf wicks
c dwayne schitnus
gm rick pitino
coach ml carr

fill out the rest of team with vin baker, good player who drank his career away, rick davis the ultimate jerk, mark blount signs a contract and turns into a mushroom, gerald green

Now that's a team that could go 0-82.

Man that’s horrible.

oops let me add into bench

rick barry’s kid who wouldn’t play for us, ended up with the bucks

Hmm...

C: Mark Blount
PF: Mikki Moore
SF: Kedrick Brown
SG: Joe Forte
PG: Stephon Marbury

I’ll give you Pitino and Carr, though.

Why is Chris Wallace escaping criticism?

Wallace drafted Forte and K. Brown.
Wallace brought in M. Moore for his first Celtic stint, and Vin Baker.

Clarence Glover

Doesn’t anyone remember Clarence Glover out of Western Kentucky? He’s another one of those guys who had zero b-ball skills.

I remember him....

Along with Steve Downing, Garfield Smith, etc.

worst celtic

Mel Counts – why? because Red picked him ahead of Willis Reed.

Len Bias?

……too soon?
